Photos from a day out at the Bluebell Railway with U Class No. 1638, and 01 Class No. 65 on service trains plus Standard 4 tank 80151 on a special dining train. The weather was a bit rubbish with very bright (albeit slightly diffused) skies which never really seemed to penetrate the gloom.

 | 18th May 2008 | Evesham Vale Light Railway (22 images)
The charming Evesham Vale Light Railway is a must for any railway enthusiast and families alike. The railway has a wonderful family feel about it and this is due to the welcoming nature of the owners Jim and Helen Shackell and all the people who operate the railway. I would like to thank the incredibly knowledgable Steve Bell for allowing me to drive St. Egwin (a stunning example of an Exmoor build) and to Jim and Helen for making me feel so welcome and allowing me to be first in line to take photos of the freshly overhauled Bassett Lowke Class 30 Atlantic 'Count Louis' together with Barnes Atlantic 'John'.
Do go and visit this railway... You won't be disappointed!!

 | 10th April 2008 to 13th April 2008 | Switzerland Railway Holiday (19 images)
A group of three of us undertook a four day railway excursion to the glorious nation of Switzerland. Rail travel was the order of the day!!
The first day started for me in the least glorious fashion possible by sitting on a Desiro from Guildford to Clapham Junction followed by a quick change to meet the rest of the chaps at London Victoria. The Victoria line blasted us across London to the magnificent Victorian splendour of London St.Pancras International, home of the Eurostar. Just over two hours and quite a long tunnel later we pitched up at Paris Gare Du Nord from where we took the RER to Gare De Lyon. A TGV carriage full of American students and four and a bit nauseating hours later brought us into Geneva but by no means the end of our expedition. The American students (according to their leader) were being met by a missionary couple in a van (yup, I didn't know how that would pan out either) but for us our destiny was the SBB Intercity to Bern and the first leg using our First Class SwissPass. The last sector from Bern to Interlaken saw a gleaming German ICE roll into the station bringing with it a first class compartment with big leather seats... completely unsuitable to the RH&DR ruffians that we are!!
Friday saw the grand exploration of the glorious nation of Switzerland commence with a 0605 train from Interlaken West to Spiez where we changed for a train to Brig. From there we transferred onto the Rhatische Bahn where the route goes narrow gauge over the Furkha Pass to Andermatt and onwards up the zigzag to Oberalp and finally to Disentis. Another change took us to the surprisingly busy junction at Reichenau where my German only just about got us a coffee each. We were reassured that this part of the Rhatische Bahn was particularly scenic and included the spectacular Landwasser Viaduct. The furthest part of our journey found us in St.Moritz where a hearty lunch of macaroni cheese with leek and sausage followed by an ice cold beer in the snow prepared us for the return journey across the country. The Rhatische Bahn retraced its route back through Reichenau and onwards to Chur where we changed for a train to Zurich (passing extremely close to the border with Lichtenstein). The last two legs of the day past relatively serenely with a couple of SBB Intercity trains from Zurich to Bern, returning finally to Interlaken in an exhausted state with just enough energy for a couple of beers.
Saturday saw a change in the weather to sunny, sunny, sunny and another rail marathon with a trip to the top of the Jungfraujoch. A leisurely start to the day found us at Interlaken East boarding a Berner Oberland Bahn train up the valley to Lauterbrunnen where we change for the WAB train to Kleine Scheidegg and a distinct difference in temperature (and the introduction of rather a lot of snow). The final stage to the top of the mountain is on a Jungfraubahn train and is almost entirely inside a tunnel through the Eiger and Monch mountains. The altitude of 11,732ft is quite a suprise and we all find ourselves out of breath doing just the smallest task... so not being ones to waste the opportunity we step out onto the snowy, -15oC, thin air environment of the top of the mountain and throw a few snowballs!! A leisurely lunch on the top of Europe is followed by the return trip down the mountain but via Grindelwald this time and onwards to Zweilutschinen where we change once again for a train to Lauterbrunnen. A short step out of the station is the cable car (I am petrified of cable cars) that climbs quite spectacularly up the side of the valley to an interchange station with a single railcar. This is unequivocally the most stunning route of the entire trip which quickly becomes apparent as the railcar winds its narrow way along a ledge clinging to the top of the valley up to Murren. What makes this journey special is the combination of tight curves, steep gradients (using adhesion traction), heart stopping precipices and epic views of the mountains in the distance all from the comfort of the single railcar.
The return journey to London was pretty much the same as the outbound journey only with a Japanese tourist group replacing the Americans!!
I've tried to avoid the arty type shots on this trip and instead stuck to record shots where possible. I wanted it to exist more as a travelogue.

 | 29th March 2008 | Severn Valley Railway (22 images)
Having suffered chronic levels of damage to the infrastructure due to severe rain the Severn Valley Railway finally re-opened the entire route on Saturday 22nd March. This herculean effort by the SVR to get themselves back into shape was no mean feat and should hopefully draw record numbers of visitors to this stunning railway. These photos were taken on Sat 29th March in driving rain and biting winds.

 | 18th February 2008 | Mid Hants Watercress Line (17 images)
Photos taken at the Watercress Line during half term. I decided to go for the more abstract on a lot of these which are not going to be to everybodys taste, but as always I'm just trying to find new ways to photograph familiar subjects. Hope you like!!

 | 11th January 2008 | More London Rail (20 images)
A load of shots taken on what can only be described as a good photography day... Enough cloud cover to diffuse the light with a nice sunset in the evening to bring out the colours. I've used a lot of wonky angles in an attempt at a providing a different look to some of the shots in this gallery!!

 | 3rd December 2007 | St. Pancras International (15 images)
The William Henry Barlow trainshed was commissioned by the Midland Railway and completed in 1868 becoming the single largest span structure of its time. After years of neglect at the hands of British Rail the entire building has been restored to its former splendour.... And what a restoration it is!!
There are a few shots from Paddington as well that were taken on the same day.

 | 1st December 2007 to 3rd December 2007 | Munich (18 images)
Munich during the month of December is one giant celebration for Christmas complete with an enormous market at Marienplatz... But, for me, what really sets it apart from other European cities is the truly stunning Bavarian architecture set amongst possibly the cleanest city I have ever been to.

A collection of photos taken from all over the island of Antigua and the circular polariser came into it's element with the fantastic weather. This collection also includes some shots taken from a helicopter over the devastation that is 2/3rds of Montserrat and shows the extent of damage due to the volcanic eruptions that are an ever present danger there.
